Frequently asked questions
Is defensive driving the course I need?
If you've been ordered by the court to take a Defensive Driving course (also referred to as defensive driving/traffic school), this is the course for you. However, if you have received a letter from the court informing you you're eligible for a Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDIC), you'll want to take our online BDIC — Click here to learn more and register.
How long will it take me to finish the course?
Our Defensive Driving course is a state-minimum of six hours, but that doesn't mean you have to finish in that timeframe. Many students take the course all in one sitting, while others work at their own pace. The choice is yours. Log in and out as often as you like — the system saves your place.
How do I get my completion certificate and inform the court I've passed the course?
If your violation occurred in one of the following districts, we will report your completion directly to the court. If your district court is not on this list, you'll need to print a copy of your completion certificate and provide it to the court yourself. It will be available for instant downloading as soon as you finish.

Are court fees the same as "driver improvement fees"?
Unfortunately, all fees paid to the court are separate from fees paid for an actual driver improvement course like ours. Although many courts call the fees paid in addition to the bail amount a "driver improvement fee," it is actually only an administrative fee. Michigan Online Defensive Driving is privately owned and operated so our course does cost money — as do all driver improvement courses.
How do I pay for the course?
You pay for the course by credit card. Once you fill out the registration form, you'll be linked to a secure credit card page to pay quickly and effortlessly. The registration is encrypted to make your purchase safe.
What if my deadline for completion of the traffic school course has passed?
Contact your Michigan court directly for instructions regarding due date extensions. Michigan Online Defensive Driving cannot extend your due date.
How do I register for this course?
It's simple — just click here and choose your course. Then complete all the appropriate fields and you're ready to begin.
Can I use any computer or device with internet service?
Sure! You can take this course anywhere, on any device (computer, mobile, or tablet) with internet access — it doesn't have to be your own. Work anywhere you have an internet connection. You can also start on one device and finish on another.
I have already enrolled. How do I get back into the program?
If you have already enrolled, you have a username and password. You may login as many times as necessary to access and complete the program.
What if I lose my internet connection?
Unfortunately, our website is unable to control your internet connection, and sometimes users experience connection issues while working. But don't worry! As you complete each section of the course, your progress is logged and saved.
What happens if I fail the final exam? Can I take it again?
Yes. You may take the final an unlimited number of times without having to pay a retake fee. A new final will be offered to you if you fail.
